The United Nations celebrates 20 March each year as the ‘International Day of Happiness.’ And why is this day celebrated? To mobilize, inspire, and advance the global happiness movement.
In this era, where mental illnesses and depression are on the rise and happiness has become a rare commodity, the observation of such a day is imperative. The unfortunate fact that happiness has become so elusive today is reason enough for us to commemorate this day. Happiness is a fundamental human right and goal for the entire mankind, and we must do all we can to achieve this goal.
Happiness Day is managed by the Illien Global Public Benefit Corporation. The Chairman and CEO of this organization is Jayme Illien, who is also credited with being the founder of the International Day of Happiness.
The theme for the 2019 International Day of Happiness is ‘Happiness for All, Forever.’
History of the World Happiness Day
On 12 July 2012, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 20 March as the ‘International Day of Happiness.’ This resolution was initiated by Bhutan, a country long known for its emphasis on happiness among its civilians. It is also a nation that has adopted the Gross National Happiness metric over the Gross National Product. Following this, the first World Happiness Day was observed on 20 March 2013.
